Producing liquid and, optionally, gaseous products from a gaseous feed comprises feeding gaseous reactants at low level 14 into a slurry bed of suspended solid particles, allowing the gaseous reactants to react as they pass upwardly through the slurry to form liquid 18 and, optionally, gaseous 16 products, collecting any un-reacted gaseous reactants and gaseous products from a headspace 88 above the slurry bed, withdrawing liquid product and/or slurry to maintain the level in the slurry bed, passing water in an indirect heat exchange 34 through the slurry bed to remove heat therefrom and allowing the heated water to flash into pressurised steam 44 which is maintained at a constant pressure and passing a second fluid in an indirect heat exchange 62 through the slurry bed to remove additional heat therefrom. The first heat exchanger may remove at least 50% of the total heat removed from the slurry bed and the fluid passing there through may be at a higher temperature than that in the second heat exchanger. Fluid from the first heat exchanger may be passed to a cooling arrangement comprising a steam drum 22 and a steam header 24, the pressure being configured or configurable to a selected value. The second heat exchange fluid may be water, and may be continuously cycled through the second heat exchanger in a closed loop. In use, the process is particularly applicable to the production of liquid and gaseous hydrocarbon products from a synthesis gas feedstock. |
