PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly reliable thermal head in which a good recording image quality is attained over a long term by enhancing wear resistance while ensuring smoothness on the surface of a protective layer. SOLUTION: In the thermal head where a resistive heater 8 and electrodes 9 and 9 for supplying power thereto are formed on an insulating substrate 7 and a protective layer 10 of glass containing a filler is formed to cover the resistive heater 8 and the electrodes 9 and 9, specific gravity of the glass 11 forming the protective layer 10 is set higher than that of the filler 12, mean particle diameter of the filler 12 is set not larger than 0.5μm, content of the filler 12 is set in the range of 5 wt.%-35 wt.%, and protrusion of the filler 12 from the surface of the protective layer is set not larger than one half of the particle diameter of the filler 12.
