<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a slot machine by increasing the amount of a prize while maintaining a game profit by storing a combination of reel stop positions in the form of a tree and using a random number generation function in the slot machine (10) offering a prize in accordance with a combination of signs when a coin is thrown in, a handle (12) is pulled and a plurality of reels (16, 18 and 20) rotate and then they stop. <P>SOLUTION: Combinations of possible reel stop position signs are assigned to terminal nodes of a lookup table stored in a ROM (34) in the form of a tree. In the tree, there are one main hierarchy, a plurality of subsidiary hierarchies and a plurality of terminal nodes. In each hierarchy, there are many entries leading to the subsidiary hierarchies and terminal nodes. When a game is started, an entry on each hierarchy is randomly selected until a terminal node is selected, by using the ransom number generator of a microprocessor (26).
