<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cyclic amide compound capable of being used for a pharmaceutical which is useful as a cytoprotective agent excellent in inhibiting apoptosis. <P>SOLUTION: This cyclic amide compound is expressed by the general formula (I): A-B-CO<SB>2</SB>R<SP>5</SP>[A is a group selected from the formulae (A-1) to (A-4); B is a 1-10C alkylene or a 3-10C alkenylene; R<SP>1</SP>is H, a 1-6C alkyl or an aryl, R<SP>2</SP>is H, a 1-6C alkyl, an aryl or hydroxy, provided that R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are not allowed to be H at the same time; R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>are identical to or different from each other, and each H, a 1-6C alkyl, an aralkyl, hydroxy, a 1-6C alkoxy, a halogen, nitro, amino, azido or the like; and R<SP>5</SP>is H, a 1-6C alkyl or an aralkyl].
