PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrial method for producing 4- trifluoromethoxybenzyl halide which is useful as an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals in high yield by using raw materials which are free from toxic problems, readily synthesized industrially and largely available. SOLUTION: In this invention, 4-trifluoromethoxybenzyl halide is produced by carrying out the reaction between trifluoromethoxybenzene and an aldehyde, e.g. paraformaldehyde in the presence of a halogenation agent, an acid catalyst and a phase transfer catalyst.
