PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalytic hydrogen reduction method by which polychlorinated biphenyl can be treated into a harmless compound under the conditions comprising a reaction temperature of≤100°C and a reaction pressure of≤1 MPa. SOLUTION: This method for treating the polychlorinated biphenyl is characterized by dispersing the polychlorinated biphenyl in an alcohol consisting mainly of methanol and then reacting the dispersed polychlorinated biphenyl with hydrogen in the presence of a sponge nickel catalyst and an alkali.
