PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform optimum automatic exposure control as much as possible even in the case of image pickup of a backlight state, an excessive light state or an object (all white) for which the entire image pickup surface is uniform or the like. SOLUTION: First, a DSP 6 of a camera device is provided with an OPD (optical detection circuit) 13 detecting a luminance distribution (histogram) of image pickup signals. Then, a situation with a specified exposure state is set beforehand and the histogram detected in actually picking up the image in the situation and a luminance integrated value (exposure control amount) obtained from the OPD 13 enabling optimum exposure control at that time are set to one template as a reference value. Then, when the photographing is actually performed, the histogram in the exposure state is measured, a correlation of the histogram and the histogram included in two or more pieces of the templates is taken, a reference value of the exposure control amount preserved in the template is corrected by the correlation value, and the optimum exposure control in the present exposure state is performed.
