PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recoil device incapable of recoil operation at the time of reverse operation of an engine. SOLUTION: In the case of doing reverse operation of an engine after starting it, an admission signal of reverse operation is not issued as a recoil operation limit switch 22 is off if a main control device 20 is not active. Therefore, if the main control device 20 is in an active states (figure 6) and the limit switch 22 is on and a reverse switch is on, based on an engine rotation signal, a vehicle speed signal and an idling signal in addition to the signals from the limit switch 22 and the reverse switch, a CDI unit issues an ignition signal at an appropriate timing and a reverse operation of the engine starts. When the main control device 20 is in the active states, the recoil operation is disabled as a tipped groove 21a of a locking member 21 fits to a log part 18b of a recoil handle 18 and damage of the recoil device and the engine can be prevented.
