PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide cooling system and method capable of controlling a flow of a coolant in an engine by dividing the flow into a cylinder head and a cylinder block. SOLUTION: This cooling system cools the engine in the cylinder head provided with a first cooling flow passage and the cylinder block provided with a second cooling flow passage. A radiator for cooling the coolant includes a high temperature flow passage for supplying a high temperature coolant from the cylinder head, a low temperature flow passage for supplying the coolant from the radiator to one or more of the cooling flow passages, a first thermostat installed at either one of the low temperature flow passage and the high temperature flow passage, a second thermostat installed in a branch flow passage for circulating the coolant from the second cooling flow passage to the high temperature flow passage, and a main passage for circulating the coolant between the cooling flow passages. The flow of the coolant between the cooling flow passages is controlled to be interrupted in a cylinder section between the main passage and the branch flow passage. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
