PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a surface with decreased roll-off and decreased scratches in the radial direction and suitable for high recording density and to provide a method for manufacturing the medium at a low cost. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium includes a texturing process to subject a nonmagnetic substrate having NiP or a NiP alloy on its surface to texturing and then a process of forming at least a nonmagnetic base film, a magnetic layer and a protective film. The texturing process includes a texturing initial process using a slurry containing colloidal silica abrasive particles and a texture tape. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
