An autogenous oxy-cutting method, in which a gas cutting jet is directed at the material to cut, involves heating the material to be cut by a laser beam to within a few degrees of the ignition temperature. The material to be cut is heated to temperatures between 300 deg C and 1200 deg C using a laser diode, with the beam arranged at the center of the cutting flame.
