PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To recognize presence/absence of a simple mail, etc., to a user by both an information terminal connected with a public line network via a line controller and a terminal supporting the L mode service. SOLUTION: In the information terminal 101 connected with the line controller 102 connected with an L mode server 105 for transmitting a modem signal including information indicating presence/absence of a mail to the user via a PSTN (public switched telephone network) 104 and for switching a state that both of a FAX 103 and the information terminal 101 capable of recognizing presence/absence of the mail to the user by receiving the modem signal are connected with the PSTN 104 and a state that only the information terminal 101 is connected with the PSTN 104, when a specific signal transmitted from the L mode server 105 to the FAX 103 is detected before the modem signal at the state that both of the FAX 103 and the information terminal 101 are connected with the PSTN 104, a modem is started and when the modem signal is detected by the modem, presence/absence of the mail to the user is recognized.
