FIELD: water treatment. SUBSTANCE: in particular, invention relates to preparing hydrophobic sorbents to clean solutions from oil pollutants and other organic impurities suitable, for example, for cleaning bilgeway ballast water and when eliminating oil outflow on water surfaces. Initial porous mineral material (swelled vermiculite) is treated with solution of poly(ethylene terephthalate) in chloroacetic acid or solution of polyurethane foam in polar oxide solvent at room temperature and at stirring over a period of time long enough to coat outside and inside surfaces of pores of material with hydrophobizer film. Sorbent is then washed with water and dried in air. EFFECT: enabled coating without alterations in specific surface of sorbent and increased its oil capacity. 3 cl, 1 tbl, 3 ex
