PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester excellent in transparency and flavor, capable of providing a blow molded product scarcely containing a foreign matter and scarcely causing stain of a mold in molding and a method for producing an inexpensive polyester by which increase of filtration pressure of a filter in film formation is reduced. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyester comprises producing the polyester consisting mainly of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component and a glycol component by using at least one kind of metal compound selected from a magnesium compound, a calcium compound, a cobalt compound, a manganese compound and a zinc compound and a phosphorus compound and using at least one kind of metal compound selected from a group consisting an antimony compound, a titanium compound and a germanium compound. In the production method, polymerization is carried out in the presence of a specific amount of the metal compound and the resultant melted polycondensation polyester is formed into chips while cooling the polyester by using a cooling water in which chemical oxygen demand (COD) satisfies a specific range and then, solid phase polymerization of the chips is carried out.
