<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 5-arylpentanol useful as a perfume or as a synthetic intermediate for medicines, agrochemicals, and the like, from a pyran compound. <P>SOLUTION: This method for producing the 5-arylpentanol represented by the general formula (2) (R<SP>1</SP>is an aryl which may be substituted with one or more alkyl or alkoxy groups and has totally 6 to 12 carbon atoms; R<SP>3</SP>is H or a 1 to 6C alkyl or alkenyl; R<SP>4</SP>is R<SP>2</SP>when R<SP>2</SP>is a monovalent group, or R<SP>2</SP>H when R<SP>2</SP>is a divalent group; R<SP>2</SP>is H, a 1 to 6C alkyl or alkenyl, or a 1 to 6C alkylidene or alkenylidene) comprises carrying out the hydrogenolysis reaction of the pyran compound represented by formula (1) (one of the dotted bonds is a double bond) in the presence of one or more catalysts selected from those each carrying two or more elements selected from noble metals in the group VIII of the periodic table, and acidic type palladium-carrying catalysts. The 5-arylpentanol can be produced in a high yield without corroding a production installation, while inhibiting the production of by-products. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO</p> |
