1288002 Blood containers UNION CARBIDE CORP 22 July 1970 [23 July 1969] 35576/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] A thermoplastics tube 10 for use in medicinal work, e.g. carrying blood, is closed by a diaphragm 20 integral with the tube and has a trough 15 forming an extension of the tube from the diaphragm to guide a cannula 22 for piercing the diaphragm. The diaphragm 20 is formed by collapsing a wall portion 14 at the end of, or intermediate the ends of the tube 10 towards an opposite wall portion 16, and sealing the two walls between a heat seal bar and a platen, the resulting trough 15 being formed upon removal of the bar and platen, and the diaphragm 20 being formed of part(s) of the wall 14 extending towards the wall 16. The or each diaphragm 20 is formed perpendicular to the tube axis by a plunger, preferably heated. Alternatively, the two wall portions 14, 16 are sealed across the end of the tube 10, and a separate trough 15 is sealed thereto. The diaphragm 20 may be cup-shaped. The tube 10 may be of polyethylene and may provide the outlet from a flexible blood container. |
