Amphoteric polysaccharide comprises an anionic group(s) and a cationic group(s) directly attached to the polysaccharide, giving good conditioning. Amphoteric polysaccharide comprises an anionic group(s) and a cationic group(s) comprising a quat. ammonium group(s) of formula (I) or (II) directly attached to the polysaccharide: N<+>R1R2R3 (I) NR1'R2' (II) R1-R3, R1' and R2' = 1-50C hydrocarbon. An Independent claim is included for a cosmetic composition containing the polysaccharide.
