PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reliable polarizer for an optical fiber which can be miniaturized. SOLUTION: A drawing part 2 is formed by extending a polarization maintaining optical fiber 1 and by reducing its diameter. An X polarized wave propagates in the X axis direction of the optical fiber 1 while holding an electric field vector, and a Y polarized wave, while holding an electric field vector orthogonal to the X polarized wave, propagates in the optical fiber 1. In the optical fiber 1, the effective refractive index of the X polarized wave is larger than that of the Y polarized wave. Accordingly, the X polarized wave can maintain a great light confinement effect, and the Y polarized wave tends to more easily be coupled to a cladding mode than the X polarized wave. Thus, the polarizer for the optical fiber which can couple only the Y polarized wave to the cladding mode and transmit it without damaging the X polarized wave is constituted by extending one polarization maintaining optical fiber having different propagation constants to two linearly polarized wave light beams orthogonal to each other.
