PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device capable of detecting a fault of at least one of an image pickup means and a processing means carrying out a prescribed processing for the image pickup signals outputted from the image pickup means. SOLUTION: In a digital camera, by an unbalance amount calculation/fault detection circuit 18, output of respective low-pass filter circuits 59 and 58 (indicated in Fig. 7) and a threshold TH supplied from a CPU 19 through a DATA<SB>-</SB>BUS are compared and the fault of an image pickup system (the system including an image pickup element 1, a driver 2, a TG/SSG circuit 3, CDS/AGC circuits 4 and 5, A/D conversion circuits 6 and 7, the driver 24 and an LED 23) is detected corresponding to the compared result.
