A control system including an optical filter, an optical amplifier coupled to the optical filter, an optical channel monitor coupled to the optical filter, and a controller coupled to the optical channel monitor and the optical filter. The control system monitors the state of a plurality of filter elements within the optical filter, and adjusts power to the filter elements as needed.
