An addition compound of p-cresol and 4-picoline, quinaldine, 2 : 3 : 6-collidine or 2 : 4-dimethyl quinoline which may be used in the separation of p-cresol from m-cresol is formed by treating the base with p-cresol or with a mixture of m- and p-cresol in which p-cresol predominates at a temperature sufficiently low to produce crystals of the addition compound e.g. below - 5 DEG C. when the base is 4-picoline or 2 : 3 : 6-collidine or below 15 DEG C. when the base is quinaldine or 2 : 4-dimethyl quinoline. Purified p-cresol may be recovered from the addition compound by distillation or by decomposing with aqueous caustic soda. In examples: (1) 4-picoline is added to a mixture of m- and p-cresol, the mixture is cooled to give crystals of p-cresol-4-picoline and the crystals are distilled to give p-cresol, in place of 4-picoline, 2 : 3 : 6-collidine may be used, and (2) quinaldine or 2 : 4-dimethyl quinoline are used in place of 4-picoline in the process of (1).
