The invention relates to the use of a labeled ligand having human CD4 specificity for producing a diagnostic used in the analysis of migration and/or distribution patterns of certain cell populations that comprise CD4 carrying cells in human individuals. The invention further relates to a composition that comprises a labeled ligand that is specific for the CD4 molecule and for CD4 carrying cells or particles, and to a method for determining the extent and the progression of diseases in which human CD4 carrying cells have a clinical significance.
