PURPOSE: An image reading system having an image sensor and an image reading method of the system are provided to control a light emitting diode that is a light source of the image sensor in real time to obtain more accurate images. CONSTITUTION: An image reading system includes a light emitting diode(11,12,13) serving as a light source of an image sensor(10), a storage(20) for storing an initial value that is the minimum value of ON time of the light emitting diode, a detector(30) for operating the light emitting diode for the time corresponding to the initial value to detect a white level, and a controller(40) for comparing the detected white level with a predetermined reference level to compensate for the initial value when the white level is lower than the reference level.
