Method for determining the authenticity of an article (A) based on transfer of labeled specific binding partners between the article and another surface. Method for determining the authenticity of an article (A) comprises fixing to at least one region of its surface a predetermined arrangement of partners (I) of specific binding pairs. The surface is contacted with a second surface, having a similar region containing complementary binding partners (II) for (I), so that (I) and (II) react. At least some of the partners are detectably labeled. The surfaces are separated so that, after separation, the arrangement of bound partners and/or labels can be distinguished, on at least one surface, from the original arrangement.
