Display (31) has sensor (34) to determine reference value of light intensity from checker pattern in measurement field (35). Pattern has maximum dark and maximum light fields. One single measurement determines middle light intensity between maximum and minimum, ideally a 50% control value. Sensor (33) determines light intensity of field (36) set according to middle value. To adjust display, control value is corrected if values from sensors do not agree. Independent claim included for device to adjust display.
