PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting top dead center of a cylinder for an engine is provided to match with an exhaust gas regulation in a cold-ignition by rapidly detecting a top dead center of a cylinder for the engine. CONSTITUTION: A top dead center detecting apparatus includes a cam shaft(20) and a disc for generating a signal to the cam shaft(20). A sensing wheel(30) is installed at one side of the cam shaft(20). A tooth-section is formed at an outer peripheral portion of the sensing wheel(30). A hall sensor(40) is provided at one side of the sensing wheel(30) in order to detect a top dead center of an engine in cooperation with the sensing wheel(30). An ECU(50) is provided to calculate the top dead center of the engine. The sensing wheel(30) includes a plurality of large wheels and a plurality of small wheels.
