The mechanical connection of floor panels involves a groove (35) formed in the side edge (5) of a first panel (1) from upper (31) and lower (33) lips and extending parallel to the side edge. On the side edge of a second panel is formed a tongue extending parallel to the side edge. In the groove is formed a cavity (39) with a locking surface (16) running inclined to the upper side (3). On the tongue is formed a locking component with a locking surface running inclined to the upper surface of the panel. Matching surfaces (14) in the groove and on the tongue act as buttresses for the locking surfaces. The upper lip (31) covers the locking surface (16).
