Sliver (1) is fed by a feed roller (8) to an opening roller (4) wound with card wire (5) to break up the fiber fringe (3) into separate fibers. A comb-shaped (14) fiber fringe support (13) presses the fringe into the gaps between the card wire (5). The wire (5) is wound in a circumferential and not a helical direction. The opening roller (4) can be equipped with internal suction through peripheral suction openings and the fringe support can be air permeable so that airflow assists penetration of the fiber fringe (3) into the wire (5). The fringe support (13) can be constructed of porous sintered material. Alternatively the fringe support has slits and no comb so that it relies only on airflow to assist penetration.
