The retractable roof for a motor vehicle has a flexible retraction section formed of fabric (10) connected to the roof panel (8) and a side flap (9). The roof panel facing edge of the fabric is mounted on a reel shaft (14) at the base of a vertical fabric passage (13) on the vehicle interior (4) facing side of the covering casing (5).
