PURPOSE: An improved arithmetic coding and decoding device is provided to extract the context words regularly by processing the digital data, storing a row set of digital data properly, and supplying the context words to the set of the digital data. CONSTITUTION: An arithmetic decoding device for decoding coded digital data as a function of a context to be imparted by decoded digital data comprises an arithmetic decoding unit(11) of coded digital data suitable to supply present decoded digital data(2), a control unit(13) suitable to supply a probability(4) to the decoding unit from a context word(3), and a processing circuit(12) suitable to store a set of rows of decoded digital data and to supply the word from preceding decoded digital data. The processing circuit is suited to periodically move data in a storage unit. Thus, an access necessary to form the word is conducted at the same position in the storage unit and hence the word is extracted in a regular method.
