PURPOSE: A method for controlling an engine is provided to improve braking force of a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission by minimizing an opening degree of an idle when a brake is operated. CONSTITUTION: Firstly, it is determined whether or not a control condition for improving braking force is satisfied(S110). If the control condition for improving braking force is satisfied, it is determined whether or not a condition for forcibly reducing an opening degree of an idle is satisfied. If the condition for forcibly reducing an opening degree of an idle is satisfied, a duty control signal representing the forcible reduction of the opening degree of the idle is outputted(S140). The control condition for improving braking force includes that a transmission lever is positioned in a driving range, a throttle valve is opened, and an air conditioner switch is turned on.
