(a) Process for making beta-(5-nitrofur-2-yl)acrolein. 5-Nitrofurfural is condensed with acetaldehyde in an organic solvent in the presence of morpholine acetate, by heating. (b) beta-(5-Nitrofur-2-yl)acrolein thus prepared. beta-(5-Nitrofur-2-yl)acrolein is a useful starting material for making various chemical and pharmaceutical products. This process (as specifically described below) avoids volatilisation of the acetaldehyde, decreases the time of reaction, and improves the yield and quality of the product over older methods.
