Discharge vessel (1) made from silica glass has protective device consisting of a self-supporting component which is made from part of a material absorbing UV radiation. The device is either joined to outer surface of inner tube (2a) and arranged at distance A from inner surface of outer tube (3a) or joined with inner surface of tube (3a) and arranged at distance A from outer surface of tube (2a). An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of the discharge vessel. Preferred Features: The distance A is less than 500 mu m. The self-supporting component absorbs radiation having a wavelength of 172 nm. The outer tube and the inner tube each have a circular cross-section. The self-supporting component is made from silica glass doped with ceria (CeO2) or titania (TiO2).
