A supported catalyst with 20-60 wt% cobalt and 0.5-4.0 wt% manganese, chromium and/or iron on an alumina, silica or titanium dioxide support is used especially for the hydrogenation of terpenylguaiacol and terpenylcatechol to terpenyl alcohols with a high content of trans-1,3-axial-isocamphylcyclohexanol. A catalyst, especially for the hydrogenation of terpenylguaiacol and terpenylcatechol to terpenyl alcohols with a high content of trans-1,3-axial-isocamphylcyclohexanol, comprises cobalt (Co) and other metal(s) (Me) on an alumina (Al2O3), silica (SiO2) or titanium dioxide (TiO2) support, where Me is manganese (Mn) , chromium (Cr) and/or iron (Fe). The reduced, stabilized catalyst (I) contains 20-60 wt% Co and 0.5-4.0 wt% Me, the Co crystallite size is 5-18 nm and the pore volume for pore radii greater than 10 nm is more than 0.20 cm<3>/g. An Independent claim is also included for a method for the production of (I) by precipitation from a salt solution containing (a) Co<2+> and Mn<2+>, (b) Co<2+> and Fe<3+> or (c) Co<2+> and Cr<3+> with a basic solution at up to pH 7.0-9.0 in presence of a support, followed by washing, isolation, drying at 90-150 deg C, calcination at 300-600 deg C, inertization with nitrogen, reduction at 350-520 deg C and stabilization with a nitrogen/oxygen mixture.
|
