PURPOSE: To reduce cycle time after buttonhole sewing until formation of buttonholes, in a buttonhole sewing machine which buttonholes and forms buttonholes in a finished fabric. CONSTITUTION: In the sewing machine, buttonhole stitches W are formed on a finished fabric by a needle 14 or the like which moves up and down, and a feed bar 16 is driven by a cloth feeding means to move the finished fabric from a sewing finishing position to a cloth cutting position where it can be cut with a cloth-cutting knife 41 and a knife receiver 42; buttonholes are formed between the linear portions of the fabric on the feed bar 16 by the cloth-cutting knife 41 and the knife receiver 42. A controller 110 controls the drive of the cloth feeding means so that the fall of the knife receiver 42 toward the cloth- cutting knife 41 starts before the fabric reaches the cloth-cutting position by the movement of the feed bar 16, and so that the arrival of the knife receiver 42 at a lowered position where it makes contact with the fabric occurs after the fabric has arrived at the cloth-cutting position.
