PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To specify a large number of functions using a small number of switches. SOLUTION: When a power switch is turned on, the switch state is read in and stored as the initial switch state (S100, S102). The switch state is read in every second until four seconds elapse after the power switching is turned on, and then a decision is made whether the initial switch state has been altered or not (S106-S112). The function of a printer is specified by the initial SW mode based on the initial switch state (S114, S120) if the switch state has been altered before four seconds elapse, otherwise the function of the printer is specified by a long depression SW mode based on the initial switch state (S118, S120). When three switches are used, eight functions can be specified for each mode and thereby total sixteen functions can be specified. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
