PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating organic waste by which the volume and amount of excess sludge to the outside of a system are reduced and a carbon source is sufficiently supplied and to provide apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: The excess sludge is reduced by methane-fermenting the organic waste in a methane fermentation process 2, biologically treating the fermentation sludge 2 by a biological treatment process 3, solubilizing the excess sludge in an ozone reaction vessel 8 to produce an easily decomposable organic material and returning the ozone-soluble sludge to the biological treatment process 3 as the organic carbon source thereby biologically treating it.
