PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide simple equipment for decontaminating the contaminated soil, in which high-efficiency decontamination can be carried out without expansion of contaminants and a method therefor. SOLUTION: A water barrier wall 2 is constructed to surround the region that the soil is contaminated by a toxic substance. A well 3 surrounded by steel pipes 21, 25 is dug on the downstream side of the contaminated region. The pipe 21 being in contact with the contaminated region is filled with a decontaminating agent 24. The pipe 25 being in contact with the uncontaminated region is provided with a gate 28 to be opened/closed. When the ground water in the region surrounded by the wall 2 passes among the particles of the contaminated soil, the ground water withdraws the toxic substance contained in the contaminated soil 1, passes through an opening of the pipe 21 and flows into the well 3. The toxic substance contained in the ground water is made harmless by the agent 24 in the pipe 21. When the concentration of the toxic substance in the well 2 is lower than the reference value, the ground water in the well 2 is discharged to the outside by opening the gate 28. When the concentration is equal to or higher than the reference value, the water in the well 2 is returned to the contaminated region again and decontaminated. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
