PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate a shift of time caused by difference of kind of a workpiece between timing of working of an automatic working device and timing of transportation of the workpiece, in allowing a robot to perform a predetermined working for the workpiece by the automatic working device placed downstream of a position to detect the workpiece in the work line on which workpieces having different exterior-shapes are flowing. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with a start phototube Dh and a control panel. The start phototube Dh detects, on the basis of the external shape of the transported vehicle body workpiece, that a vehicle body has been transported to a predetermined position on a vehicle-body-painting line on which different kinds of vehicle bodies M are flowing. A control panel allows a painting robot RB downstream of the predetermined position to perform a predetermined work of painting on the basis of detected timing of the phototube Dh. In the automatic painting work, the timing for starting the predetermined work which is preset in the robot is corrected on the basis of detected kind of the workpiece and the detected timing.
