The invention essentially consists in the fact that details in especially light or especially dark areas of an image are generally very hard or impossible to identify and, as a result, do not need to be coded and transmitted, avoiding significant reduction of the quality of the image. To this end, a quantization characteristic comprising a neutral zone is used for such image areas, in order to avoid using small individual coefficients, namely details, in said image areas. |
