<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for burning and removing a particulate matter in exhaust gas from an internal combustion engine such as a diesel engine or the like, and a method for efficiently burning and removing the particulate matter collected by a filter coated with the catalyst. <P>SOLUTION: The catalyst for burning the particulate matter in the exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine is obtained by supporting at least one kind of an element selected from the group consisting of gold, silver, copper, iron, zinc, manganese and a rare earth element as an active component on a carrier component such as a hydroxide, oxide, carbonate or sulfate of an alkaline earth metal or on a carrier component comprising a compound oxide containing the alkaline earth metal. In the method for removing the particulate matter in the exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine by collecting the particulate matter by the filter provided behind the outlet of the internal combustion engine, the catalyst described in the claim 7 is used in the filter. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
