PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plating-free solid wire for welding which is capable of maintaining lubricant or graphite on the wire surface and/or immediately below the wire surface without allowing them to peel, has stable wire feedability and arc stability, generates less spatters and fumes, and has excellent welding workability. SOLUTION: The wire has pits which are opened on the circumference and are wider inside than at opening and/or pits having a portion which is not irradiated with an incident light from the outside. A graphite, an Na compound and a sulfide of 0.01-3 g per 10 kg of wire and a polyisobutene-contained oil of 0.1-2 g per 10 kg of wire are present inside these pits and/or on the wire surface. Twenty or more pits are present per wire circumference length along the wire circumference, and the pit length ratio is 0.5%-50%. The graphite (002) has a surface distance d<SB>002</SB>of 0.3353-0.3372 nm determined from the peak position of a diffraction line. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
