Opening apparatus 10 suitable for instance for opening jar or bottle lids. The apparatus 10 comprising a lower part 12 with four recesses 18 to locate opening tools 20. A downwardly converging frusto-conical portion 26 with a rubber lining 28 is provided to grip items located therein. The upper part 14 is locatable on the item to unscrew a closure thereon and comprises a upwardly converging frusto-conical rotatable member 36 with a ribbed lining. A motor is provided in the upper part 14 to rotate the engagement part 36.
