PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording apparatus capable of ensuring a stable printing operation over a long term. SOLUTION: A flushing operation is executed from a recording head 6 mounted on a carriage 1 into a capping means 11. In the case the ink storage amount in the capping means 11 exceeds a predetermined value during execution of a printing operation, a flushing operation is executed in a flushing box. With reference to an ink amount counter for monitoring the ink storage amount in the capping means 11, whether or not an idle sucking operation for discharging the ink in the capping means 11 is to be executed is judged before starting a printing operation. Based thereon, an idle sucking operation is executed. Consequently, the number of flushing operations in the flushing box 13 can be reduced to the minimum degree so that degree of the ink component deposition on a porous member 14 (KANEBOU sponge sheet) disposed in the flushing box 13 can be reduced.
