<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide artificial graphite and a method for manufacturing the same to reduce the absolute amount of energy necessary for graphitizing treatment. <P>SOLUTION: By the method for manufacturing the artificial graphite, a graphitizing catalyst is added to a carbon source material to carry out the graphitizing treatment. As for the graphitizing catalyst, at least one kind among manganese metal, manganese alloys and manganese compounds is used. The graphitizing catalyst is made to be present in the carbon source material by a mechanochemical method to carry out the graphitizing treatment to produce the artificial graphite having ≤0.3375 nm interplanar spacing (d<SB>002</SB>) of the 002 planes measured by X-ray diffraction and ≥10 nm grain size (LC) in the C-axis direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO |
