A method for sorting a plastic fraction in a sorting plant comprises: (a) separating plastics of one type from a mixture of waste; and (b) using a ballistic separator to separate rigid objects from flexible objects in the fraction. An Independent claim is also included for a waste sorting plant comprising: (A) sorters (2, 4, 6, 8), each of which separates out plastics of a single type; (B) conveyors (10, 12, 14, 16); and (C) a ballistic separator (26) which separates each fraction into rigid and flexible objects. The conveyors transport each fraction from the sorters to the ballistic separator.
