This novel backrest can be moved on its back rod (8). It has upper- (1) and lower- (2) sections, butting together in a horizontal joint (3). The parts pivot together on mountings on either side of the rod (8). One of these (4) is fastened to the upper section, the other (5) to the lower. Within the mountings, cylindrical bearing rollers (6) are fitted. A further mounting (9) fastens to the upper end of the back rod. It has an opening penetrated by the bearing rod (7). This is also carried in the bearing rollers, which comprise either a rigid or an elastic material. Preferably, the mountings are injection moulded polypropylene or polystyrene. Preferably the bearing rollers are rubber.
