The invention concerns a programmable device for polarization mode dispersion compensation in a high speed link on a transmission optical fiber of N channels, N >/= 1, each channel C<sb>j</sb> corresponding to a signal of given wavelength lambda . The invention is characterized in that the device comprises: means (3) for dynamic control of polarization restoring, for each channel C<sb>j</sb>, a state of polarization projected on two natural linear states a<sb>j</sb> and b<sb>j</sb>, with fixed orientation, separated by a time interval tau <sb>PDMj</sb> characteristic of the mean polarization mode dispersion on said link with wavelength lambda <sb>j</sb> associated with said channel C<sb>j</sb>; programmable means (5) for generating optical delays to adjust, on said link and for each channel C<sb>j</sb>, the value of the time tau <sb>PDMj</sb> to a value DELTA tau <sb>j</sb> less than the duration of a bit defined on the basis of the transmission speed of the link.
