Damping device for a cable railway connects a conveying unit (7) via a suspending unit to a cable. At least one pre-tensioned damping element (13) made of solid material provided between the conveying unit and the suspending unit supports in the mounted state two opposite-lying bearings (14, 15). The first bearing rigidly connected to the suspending unit is arranged below the second bearing rigidly connected to the conveying unit. The first bearing and/or the second bearing have bearing surfaces (28, 29) angled relative to the vertical toward the longitudinal axis of the damping element. Preferred Features: The bearings and the damping element are rotationally symmetrical bodies. The bearing surfaces are conical or hollow cone-shaped.
