PAPER STRENGTHENING AGENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper strengthening agent free from the generation of harmful materials such as formaldehyde, having extremely low toxicity in itself and effective for improving dry paper strength and wet paper strength and provide a paper having improved wet paper strength by using the paper strengthening agent. SOLUTION: The paper strengthening agent contains a homopolymer of hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylamide or a copolymer of the monomer and other copolymerizable vinyl monomers wherein the hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylamide accounts for 5-100 wt.% in the copolymer. A paper having improved wet paper strength can be produced by impregnating a paper with an aqueous solution of the (co)polymer and subjecting the product to thermal dehydration and crosslinking treatment.
